QR code design checklist for brand and scan quality
A QR can look on-brand and still scan reliably. The key is preserving contrast, quiet zone, size, and a final real-device scan test.
Protect the quiet zone
The blank area around a QR code helps cameras detect the code boundary. Frames and nearby copy can be useful, but they should not squeeze the code itself.
When exporting for print, place the QR into the final design and scan from the actual expected distance.
Use brand design carefully
Logos, colors, and rounded shapes can improve trust, especially when a QR appears on packaging or sales material. Keep the styling simple enough that the code still scans quickly on older phones.
For premium printed assets, export a vector or high-resolution file and avoid stretching the QR in design tools.
- Strong foreground and background contrast.
- No important artwork inside the quiet zone.
- Final scan test from the real material and distance.
